Overgrip and Basegrip
Grips in tennis fulfill several tasks simultaneously. On the one hand, the grip prevents blisters from forming on the hands, and on the other hand, it absorbs the shock at the point of ball contact. In addition to shock absorption, the grip also absorbs sweat, which improves grip.
Grips are usually self-adhesive, about 200 cm long and between 2.5 and 3 cm wide. They are wrapped spirally around the handle. A distinction is made between base grips and overgrips. Generally, the term grip refers to the latter meaning.
The base grip is already on the racket handle when purchased and fulfills the above points in a basic form.
Most athletes also use an overgrip in addition to the base grip to achieve even better grip. For this reason, many grips are provided with a coarse texture or contouring.
Structure of a Grip
Standard grips consist of a layer of foam sealed with a non-slip and abrasion-resistant surface. These grips are often available individually packaged and are long enough for any racket handle, even with a slightly tighter winding. Terry grips are now also available, which are mainly offered as meter/roll goods. Grips are available in many different colors.
