Features of the Tennis Racket
When purchasing a tennis racket, many factors need to be considered. Factors such as weight, head size, or balance point are important elements that influence the playing characteristics of a racket.
Weight
A lightweight racket is particularly suitable for beginners. Such a beginner racket, also known as a recreational racket, is characterized by its low weight, making it automatically more maneuverable and less strenuous on the inexperienced arm, which is important for preventing tennis elbow. Another advantage of a lighter racket is that it requires less effort to hit the ball, allowing for more focus on technique.
In general, the heavier a tennis racket, the better the control. The lighter a tennis racket, the easier it is to play. Among the heaviest tennis rackets is the one used by Roger Federer from the Wilson brand: the Pro Staff RF97 Autograph. With its 340 grams, it offers extreme control over the shot. Light rackets, such as the Head Speed PWR weighing only 255 grams, are much easier to play.
Head Size
The larger the head size of the racket, the larger the sweet spot. Since a larger sweet spot simplifies tennis play, large head sizes are ideal for beginners. A large sweet spot generates a lot of power and spin at the expense of control and precision. Slightly smaller head sizes are more suitable for advanced tennis players, as the player naturally generates more power through trained technique and therefore requires more support in terms of racket control.
Grip Size
The grip size should not be underestimated. The rule of thumb is: when gripping the handle, there should be a maximum of one centimeter of space between the fingertips and the palm of the hand, without scratching the palm with the fingernails. Minor changes to the grip size can be made using different overgrips.
Frame Length
Frame length varies little in adults and is usually 27 inches, or approximately 68.6 cm. However, there are slight variations in frame length. A longer racket frame generates more power due to the greater leverage. Among the disadvantages is the loss of control. Children's rackets vary more in length as they are still growing.
Balance Point
The balance point is the point where the racket is balanced. If this balance point is very close to the head of the racket, more power is generated when striking the ball. A racket with this type of balance is called "head-heavy." Rackets with a balance closer to the grip generate less power but offer more shot control. A balanced and neutral racket has a balance point of around 320 mm. This balance point can be adjusted afterwards using lead tape.
Frame Profile
The thickness of the frame also has an influence on the playability of a tennis racket. The thinner the frame, the more flexible the racket, and therefore the more control is gained. A thicker frame, on the other hand, generates slightly more power.
International Tennis Federation (ITF) Guidelines
While the hitting surface must not exceed 39.4 cm (15.5 inches) in length and 29.2 cm (11.5 inches) in width, tennis rackets, according to the rules of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), must not exceed a total length of 73.7 cm (29 inches), with the standard length being 68.6 cm (27 inches). The width is limited to 31.7 cm (12.5 inches).
